Transfer iTunes from One Computer to Another

It is not a difficulty to transfer the iTunes library due to the XML file located in your iTunes folder. The file saves the information of your music library and can be used to recover your library settings by simple replacing the current XML file. Meanwhile, you could also transfer the music from one computer to another by using storage devices such as flash drives and CD-RW or DVD-RW discs. These blank discs are able to hold a great number of information, and can be used as backup discs in case of future hard drive failure or computer upgrades.

iTunes Transfer using Flash Drive

Step 1: Open "Finder". Click the "Finder" icon on your dock and click the "Music" tab on the sidebar. For PC, open Windows Explore and go to "Documents and settings/ My Documents/ My Music."

Step 2: Double-click the "iTunes" folder.

Step3: Plug in the flash drive into your computer's USB port.

Step 4: Click and drag the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to the flash drive icon in Finder or Windows Explorer. Click and drag the "iTunes Music" folder to the flash drive.

Step 5: Click the flash drive icon, and click the "Eject" button to safely remove it.

Step 6: Insert the flash drive into the new computer's USB slot. Copy and paste the "iTunes Music" folder into the new computer's "iTunes" folder. Copy and paste the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file, and click "Replace."

iTunes Transfer using Backup disc

Step 1: Insert a blank CD-RW or DVD-RW disc.

Step 2: Open Finder by clicking the "Finder" icon on your dock. For PCs, double-click the "Windows Explorer" icon on your desktop.

Step 3: Open a new Finder window. Click "File" at the top of your screen and click "New Finder Window." For PCs, click "File," "New" and "Window."

Step 4: Click the "Music" tab on the sidebar, and double-click the "iTunes" folder. For PCs, go to "Documents and Settings/(user name)/My Documents/My Music."

Step 5: Click and drag the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to the blank disc icon in your Finder or Windows Explorer window. Click and drag the "iTunes Music" folder to the blank disc icon. Click the blank disc icon, and click the "Burn" button to burn the information to the disc.

Step 6: Eject the disc, and insert the disc into the new computer's disc drive. For Macs, open Finder and copy and paste the "iTunes Music" folder into the new computer's "iTunes" folder. Copy and paste the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file, and click "Replace." For PCs, open Windows Explorer and copy and paste the "iTunes Music" folder into the new computer's "iTunes" folder. Copy and paste the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file, and click "Replace."
